Caron Big Cake Carry-All Bag One Skein Wonder

If you’ve seen the new Caron Big Cakes at your local Michaels store you have probably stopped to check them out, pet them, and then contemplate taking one home with you. If you find yourself wondering what you can make with just one of these puppies, boy have I got the pattern for you!

Caron Big Cake One Skein Wonder

This carry-all bag is a One Skein Wonder because, well, you only use one skein to make a super chic super large bag! And I couldn’t pass up those colors. Mmmm reminds me of autumn and falling leaves. Where’s my coffee?

This pattern calls for about 580 yards, which we know is perfect for the Caron Big Cakes because of this review. Of course you could use any other yarn as well. What’s REALLY important are the dimensions.

Carry-All Bag Patternย

For this pattern we are using the Japanese folding method called Azuma Bukuro. In order for this to work correctly we need to have a 1:3 ratio, meaning that the length is three times longer than the width. We use the Lemon Peel stitch; a super easy stitch that leaves no holes and beginners can do it too! Find a video tutorial for that stitch here.

Caron Big Cakes Example

MATERIALS:

One Caron BIG Cake (approx. 600 yards)
Crochet hook in size H (5mm)
Yarn needle for sewing

If you need help reading a crochet pattern, make sure you head over here and check out this detailed post.

PATTERN:

Leaving a long tail (for sewing later) ch-41. * sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next * repeat between * * to end. (40)
*** should be approx. 13โ€ wide depending on your tension
Row 1: Ch-1, *sc in first st, dc in next* repeat to end. Ch-1 and turn (40 sts)
Row 2 and beyond: repeat row 1 until rectangle reaches desired length (1:3 ratio)

Wanna save this for later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it when you're ready.

Remember that you need the 1:3 ratio to get the correct sizing for folding. Since our width is 13″ (ish) we need the length to be 39″ (ish).

Fold piece as in this video and sew up edges using the Mattress Stitch. Now you’ve got a bag sans strap. Let’s crochet a strap using our leftover yarn and sew it to the corners.

Sewing crochet together

FOR STRAP:

Row 1: leaving long tail (for sewing later), ch-11. * sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next * repeat between * * to end. (10)
Row 2: Ch-1, *sc in first st, dc in next* repeat between * * to end. (10)
Row 3 and beyond: repeat row 2 until desired strap length is reached. I did mine about 12″ long.

Strap for Carry-All crochet bag

Position strap on each corner of the bag as pictured and, using the long tail, sew around the point of the bag corner. Then flip to inside and sew together along the straight edge on the other side (as pictured).

Strap of the carry-all crochet bag

Next, you’ll finish off the edges using a single crochet row around the opening of the bag – both sides. To do this, you’ll simply join to any stitch (preferably in a “corner” or seam stitch) and single crochet evenly around the opening. When you get back around, use the Invisible Join to make it as seamless as possible.

Weave in your ends and BOOM! You’ve got an awesome carry-all bag. This puppy can fit FIVE skeins of regular worsted weight yarn inside ๐Ÿ˜ฎ and I could honestly fit more! LOVE IT!!! ♥

  1. Thank you for the video and free pattern. I have that same Caron Cake Yarn so Iโ€™ll try it..
  2. Hi Ashlea. Thank you for this incredible bag pattern. It's 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, and I found your pattern. I'd been wishing to make a bag and found your pattern pinned on my board. Of course in April, buying yarn was a challenge, so I was looking for something to make using my ginormous stash, and boy did you deliver. Several years ago I was on the Caron Cake and other cake yarn bandwagon and bought an amount that would clearly exceed my life expectancy. I realized that the uses for the sudden color change yarn was limited and told my daughter she'd better learn to crochet because that cake yarn is part of her inheritence. But Ashlea , your lovely bag pattern has changed all that. I am now on my third back and won't stop until all those cake yarns are stitched into beautiful bags, for all seasons, and then, No More sudden color change yarns. Thank you Ashlea for filling my quarantine days with crafty goodness. I will be supporting your craft with purchases after I finish making all my bags.
  3. Hi, Ashlea, I'm Julie, funny, also from Kansas. I didn't expect to see that when I looked closer. I can crochet, but I have difficulty following the abbreviated patterns. I generally have to write them out. I expect if I didn't let years go between executions, I would get better at it. I do, however make quilts, hmmm, at least flimsies (tops) regularly. I used your ratio and made a quilted book bag for myself. I successfuly lined it, and put a full width divided pocket in it. I had a "Hello Jane" fat eighth fabric pack in 16 fabrics, and made 2 x 16 strips, 8 once and 8 twice for a total of 24 strips. It came out beautifully. I never would have thought of doing it if I hadn't ran across your bag. thanks! I'll make a note of your email & send you a pic when I get one taken. Watch for my addy in your inbox.
  4. I just finished my first of MANY so in love with it, thank you yet again. One question though, do you think it would be possible to line it?
  5. Hey Ashlea, I made this bag and it is just beautiful. Thank you for ANOTHER easy to follow, gorgeous, pattern. Pearl
  6. Hi I am also not understanding the straps...could you possibly do a video? It would be very helpful! When you say "leave a long tail" how long do you suggest? A foot long, 2 feet long? Thanks Jan
  7. Hi, I'm not grasping how to attach the straps to the bag. Not quite sure where I'm lost, but w/o a visual, I'm not having any luck. Is there anywhere I can find a video of how to do this? Or can you explain it a little more in detail?
  8. Hi I finished making this bag last night, based on the dimensions in the pattern. It's so much smaller than the bag that you are holding in the picture. Is yours bigger than the dimensions given in the pattern?? I want to try it again, just not sure how much bigger to make it.
  9. I love this pattern! My 1st bag is almost done, only about 10 inches to go. The Big Cake yarn is on sale this week, I feel another bag in the wings!
  10. I would love to start this project but do have a Caron big cake. Can you make it with other yarn as long as you have 600 yds?
  11. Is it possible to make this larger? I did one with this pattern. Then tried to make one larger. I guess Iโ€™m not good at this ratio stuff cause it just isnโ€™t working. So aggravating if itโ€˜s not possible. Thanks to anyone that can answer my question.
    1. Hey! Yes you can. Just remember to keep your 1:3 ratio. I've also learned that the width of the bag when finished = half of the length. So if you did a 20 x 60" bag, the bag would end up being about 30" wide when all is said and done. Does that help?
      1. Yay! I will keep going. I took some off thinking I went to far still wouldnโ€™t fold right so I gave up thinking itโ€™s not possible. My measurement is 19 wide so very close to your estimate. Iโ€™m excited to get back to it. Thank you so much for replying back.
  12. The first time I started, it reached 12" so I tried again by loosening my tension but it came out 12" again. What should I do? Should I add more chains or go up a hook size?
    1. Hey Nicole! You could go with the 12" and it will be a slightly smaller bag. It should end up being about 18" wide after all finished and sewn together, so still a good size bag! If you want, you could also go up a hook size. Hope that helps!
  13. I'm math-challenged this morning. I have a Sugarwheel from Hobby Lobby. Someone gave it to me, and it's a discontinued color. I've been waiting for a good one-cake, non-shawl project for it. I'd like to make a smaller version of this bag. It's 255 yards, and I'd like the handle to be semi long, like yours in this pattern. Can you tell me how many ch I should start with?
    1. Hmmm I'm not sure to be honest. This is about half the size of the big cakes, so maybe do a bag 7" x 21"? Or maybe 6 x 18 to make sure you have enough for the strap. Keep me posted!
  14. I love the bag. I started one today and like how it is coming. I tend to go more for a crossbody bag. Do you think I could just make the strap part longer to accomplish that?
  15. Going to try this on the addi king as well - making two panels, sewing them together and then folding according to your instructions. Will be using chunky yarn to make the stitches firm enough to correspond to crocheted work. Will post pics when completed.
  16. I bought a cake to make this, but now realize it calls for a big cake. Is there an easy way to figure out how wide to make it so it'll be long enough to make a smaller version?
    1. I had the same problem with the cakes as well and I also made mine bigger too lol. Ended up using two whole regular carron cakes. To make it smaller you just have to use ratio 1:3. So on the pattern it ask for it to be 13 inches wide if you wanted to make it say 10 inches wide you would then have to do approximately 30 inches long. So whatever width you make it, just times that by 3. Hope that helped!
  17. I started it and it's only measuring about 11 1/2 inches across, and I normally have pretty loose tension. Should I maybe ch 51 stitches instead of 41? Thank you!
    1. I scrolled down to the comments to see if I was the only one having the same problem. My tension can vary but even with going up two hook sizes i'm still way off on size.
    1. It is right around 19 - 20" wide across the base. It usually comes out to about half of whatever the length is of the rectangle. Hope that helps!
    1. Hello, You'll just start with a cast on of about 13", then continue in rows until you get the desired length. Hope that helps!
  18. I have to try this, (really an excuse to buy one of these super Cakes!) shhhh don't tell hubby! I have entirely too much yarn as it is!
  19. I am looking for some kind of Gage that can be used to convert a knit pattern to crochet an visa versa. Know of any?
