Beanie hats are a staple in this house. We have beanies with mohawks, beanies with cables, beanies with holes in the top, beanies for preemies and beanies for Ninja Turtles. We’re beanie fools, yo! And, today we are adding to that long list of beanie love with this Easy Peasy 30-Minute Beanie Pattern.

Easy Peasy 30-Minute Beanie

I love that this pattern is so quick AND versatile. We are using two strands of worsted weight yarn together, so you need less yarn of each color. You could use two strands of the same color or add a little spice to your crochet life by using two contrasting colors. In the examples here I am using Brava Worsted in “wine” for the red and “avocado” paired with “dove heather” for that gorgeous green.

how to make a beanie fast

I am not a big pom pom person typically, but I picked up this pom pom maker last weekend annnnnd I fell a little in love. I loved it so much I picked up the smaller size set as well so now I can make FOUR different sizes (here’s a less expensive version with all four sizes). I’ve made roughly 1,087 pom poms since and they are all beautiful and fluffy little buggers.

If you’re looking for the CHILD size of the 30-Minute Beanie you can find that here.

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn (in one color or two different colors)
-approx. 175 – 200 yards total
Crochet hook in size K/6.5mm

Pull from both ends of one skein for the same color or pull one strand from two separate skeins to create that peek-a-boo effect. SO MANY OPTIONS! ♥

If you need help reading a crochet pattern, make sure you head over here and check out this detailed post.

Finished beanie dimensions and pattern notes:

About 11” across brim when folded, 8” from crown to brim. If you would like a tighter fit or if you are making for a young adult, you could go down a hook size to a J/6mm hook.

The ch-2 at the beginning of the row does not count as a dc.

One of my testers stated it took her 35 minutes to finish, another said 40 minutes. I timed myself and I was right at 30 minutes start to finish (although many factors will influence this time frame such as kids, pets, television, potty breaks etc). And, the more of these hats you make the quicker you will be!

Pattern:

Row 1: Magic circle. Ch-2, dc 8 times in circle. Join with sl st to top of first dc. (8)

  1. Do you have a easy fandora hat pattern easy peasy beanie is fun to make but I have a gentleman that would like aa fandora or Panama hat thank you
    1. Hi Shelba! I start this pattern with a magic circle instead of chaining a circle, but if you're not comfortable with that you can chain 4 and slip stitch to the 1st chain to make a circle. OR, if you're feeling adventurous, I have a tutorial for the magic circle which can be found here: https://hearthookhome.com/make-magic-circle-crocheting-round/
  2. I've been doing this pattern with one yarn instead of two, and it still comes out just lovely! It just has a slight gap between each stitch. They look beautiful with little flowers stitched into one corner. I've only been crocheting for a month, and this was such an easy pattern to follow. Thank you for sharing it!
  3. Hi. I am an experienced knitter learning to crochet. After joining the round and ch2, do I start the first dc stitch in the same loop as the chain or the one after it? I've seen patterns with it both ways. Thanks!
    1. Hi Nellie! The ch 2 at the beginning of each row is to bring your yarn up to the height of the stitches you will be making that row. Hope this helps!
  4. Thank-you so much for this pattern!! I am planning to make many of these with all of my leftover yarn to donate to the chilrens hospital in our area for the next Christmas season..
  5. Really like this pattern. Only problem I had is with the starting 8 double crochet stitches. My hats are pointed. I put pompoms on the top to cover the point up. I now start with 8 single crochet stitches and the hat is perfect. I also crochet tight. I have made 6 so far today. Going to try with bulky yarn and a J hook to see how the size is. Want this one for my 5 year old niece. This has been the easiest and quickest hat pattern I’ve found. Thank you.
    1. Bless your heart! I have made 3 so far and they have all come out pointed and its has beem driving me crazy, now i'm going to try the 8 singles. Thank you so much for sharing!!
  6. Hi! I have only just started crocheting and the only thing I made before this hat was a couple of granny squares. I love how easy this was to make! The only thing I’m unsure about, and it’s probably something I’m doing rather than something with the pattern, is that when I chain 2 at the beginning of each row I end up with a gap between the rows. If you or anyone could tell me what I’m doing wrong, I’d appreciate it!
    1. Hi Emma! At the end of each round, are you slip stitching into the chain 2 instead of the top of the 1st DC? If so, that could be the problem. Hope that helps!
  7. Thank you for sharing such an easy, stylish, and most importantly, warm hat. I’ve used your pattern and made over 100 hats for needy school kids and the homeless in my area, taking the liberty to use your “latte” style, and also switched colours every row for a striped hat, added one wide stripe near the brim, a dual-coloured stripe, two narrow stripes, and, since I’m not done crocheting for charity, who knows what other colour variations will come to mind. Your pattern is so simple and easy to remember. Thanks again.
    1. Wow! I am so glad you have found such a wonderful use for this pattern! Hats off to you and your charity work!
  8. I follow the stitch count and measure every row, but my hat never comes "down" from the top like your pictures. It keeps getting wider at the bottom all the time. No matter what size I try they turn out huge, floppy, and unusable. I don't understand what's going wrong.
      1. Hmm. I wonder if you need to go down a hook size? What is your tension normally like, tight or loose?
        1. I am having the same issue. Going to restart it and hopefully it works out this time. New crocheter here!
      2. Im having the same peoblem im going to try to go down a hook size because its just getting bigger and bigger
    1. I had the same problem. I used a size 6 hook and it didn’t look right at all. Just got wider and wider.
  9. I have made a dozen of this pattern for my friend who is going through cancer. I made one for my grandson, age 14, one for my little grandson (18 months), one for a stepgrand (age 3)....I think that's all...I had never made hats before except for my first baby hat just starting out and it wasn't exactly right and a SLIPPER SOCK that turned itself INTO a baby doll hat. I had great success with this pattern. I made the chemo hats with cotton yarn. But for the life of me I can't see getting it done in 30 minutes.
    1. I just highlighted the instructions from the end to the beginning, copied (ctrl + C) then pasted (ctrl+V) to a blank page in Word and printed it. You could then save the instructions or just delete it after you print. To highlight, position you cursor at the last word then press and hold the right mouse button. Drag the mouse cursor up to the beginning of the instructions and let go. The instructions will be highlighted. I go from the bottom up because it is easier to control the page movement. This only works for free patterns, won't work for .pdf's.
  10. Just made my first beanie hat. I love it and the crab stitch really finishes the hat off. I know I will be using it a lot. Thanks for sharing.
  11. I chained 2 at the end of each round like the pattern says. When I slip stitch at the end of the round, the chain 2 leaves a noticeable gap in the hat! How do I get rid of this gap while crocheting? =(
  12. I loved this hat so much I made enough for all my nieces. I was ill so this helped me at least something for Christmas. Thank you so much! With a few adjustments, I turned several into slouchy hat's. So fast and fun.
  13. I love this very quick but cute hat. This is my third crochet project. I made it with the left over yarn from my first project which was a double crochet scarf. Started it last night and finished this morning. Thank you so much.
    1. I used super bulky, L hook and only increased 4 times. Hat is for my sons very large head. I would have only increased 3 times for me.
  14. I'm new to crocheting, sort of, and am trying this easy beanie. What I can't figure out is how to get the counts correct. If there are 16 stitches on row 2, and you have 2 in each for round 3 (the first one has the ch2+dc), how do you have only 24 for round 3 when 16x2=32? Then round 4 has only 32 when even if there were 24 in round 3, 2x24=48? The numbers in parentheses are how many you have when you have completed the row/round, correct?
    1. You are alternating from the * so you will have 1 DC in one stitch and then 2 DC in the next and 1 DC in the following then 2 DC, etc. etc. This means you will have 2 DCs in 8 stitched and 1 DC in the other 8. Hope this makes sense to you.
  15. I posted this to my group, then went about making the hat. It was so tight with a J it made a bowl with 8 stitches so I jumped to a K hook and had the same issue. So in the interest of not giving up I started over with 10 in the MC. When I checked my group this morning I discovered another crocheter had the same issue in size. Knowing that he, like myself, crochets a very tight stitch I decided it was our issue perhaps and not yours. At any rate it worked just right at 10, 20, 30, 40, an 50 on the increases. Just thought you would like to know in case anyone else has this issue. Thanks, Gloria.
    1. I was so upset and thought it was just me, so thank you for posting this! after trying relentlessly for almost a week but to no avail...i was really thinking I should just put this aside and look for a new hobby, chalk it up to being left-handed and a tight crocheter with only the internet to refresh my memory on something I haven't picked up in almost 10 years. This helped a bunch and I really appreciate the original patterns author and your follow up post alike. Dd
  16. OMG, I am so in love with your Easy Peasy 30 minute Beanies!!!! And the crab stitch... Love it, also!!!! Now to find an Easy Peasy Scarf! I'm a slow crocheter to begin with. And I presented an idea to my biker chapter to crochet hats & scarves to the less fortunate people in our area back in March to be done all year til November. Being a slow crocheter, I don't have many done (plus seeing all the great crochet items on your FB page... ughhhhh, can't seem to get any done ). But I found this pattern & have whipped up a beanie a day (work & personal life gets in the way of doing more).
  17. You may get two messages- This is Mary and I purchased your Messy Bun Hat pattern on Ravelry.com because my niece had sent me 4 skeins of yarn to make her hats. I have made 6 now and counted every row and can never come up with the same number of stitches in the end. Do I count the very first stitch? As when I get the first 30 done, Ch. 2, does this count as a stitch? And the next row when I sc, does the first sc count as one of the stitches? Not a big hurry for this! Most patterns say do not count this stitch, so I have not. And, I am sure that is why I get myself in trouble The girls love their hats and I want to thank you so much for your pattern! It is fun to make as I am retired, live in southern Wisconsin and have had very cold "crocheting" weather! Thank you for your time and energy! Now I am off to find your FB page. Thanks Again, Mary
