Do you have a feline friend that needs a place to chill other than on your lap or keyboard? The Kitchen Chair Cat Hammock is just the thing. They can hang out with the family during dinnertime or while you’re tapping away on your laptop without being tempted to jump on the table.

Kitchen Chair Cat Hammock Crochet Pattern

While I don’t have a cat, I have plenty of friends that do and I hear stories all the time of them trying to crochet, work on a computer, or pay bills and that’s when their cat decides that it is human interaction time. This cute little hammock ties to the legs of any kitchen chair and will give them a place to be near you while not being on you. It also gives them a nice perch to survey the household, or should I say their domain.

I probably should have included this in the 2024 Crochet Pet Series, but I ran out of months in the year. That’s okay though, because we can always use new and cute patterns for fur babies, am I right?

Cats love to hang out with their favorite humans, but on their terms. Sometimes they need a little space for a cat nap and let’s face it, they want to lounge somewhere comfy and out of the path of feet that might disturb them (heaven forbid). This hammock is the perfect thing for that!

Will this crochet hammock work for other pets? Absolutely! Rats, mice, gerbils, sugar gliders, ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, and even small reptiles like bearded dragons and leopard geckos would love one. Basically any pet that likes a cozy elevated area. Since this pattern is made from the center out and in a square, it is possible to stop whenever you reach the desired size of the space/place you’ll be hanging the hammock.

This pattern can tie easily to cage corners, just keep in mind if your pet is a chewer, make sure to use a cotton or wool yarn with little to no polyester content (you don’t want them ingesting plastic). Also note that if your pet is a known chewer, you might pass on this pattern entirely just to be safe!

You’ll want to tie the hammock to the chair legs directly above a crossbar if possible. Cotton is the best yarn to use for this project due to it being durable and it will stand up to repeated washings. Cotton is less likely to stretch and it is absorbent. If the hammock gets gross, cotton is easily washable and will hold its shape better than acrylic yarn.

  1. My cats are going to love this, only one problem. Six cats, four chairs Two will have to take turns. Can't wait to have my couch back to myself
    1. Hi Lucielle! Yes, at the end of each round, you will join to the top of the 1st stitch, then turn your work so you are looking at the other side and will work the next round in the opposite direction. It is just like working in rows, but with joining in rounds too.
      1. I love this idea! Mine is turning out like a bowl, what am I doing wrong? I love the panel, but after the second round there is no more count of stitches (20, 36) Is there a tutorial for this? Mine is a bowl, not flat like the design... Help please, kitties await!
        1. Hi Lacy! Each round after Round 2 will increase by 16 sts. If you need, you can reach out to sarah@hearthookhome.com for pattern support.
  2. Hello, I was just wondering if you had crochet books that you have done. Would love to see them. Thank you Jody
    1. I think the Tr is still the usual treble crochet in US terms. So Rnd 3 is 4 DC, then into the next stitch 2DC a Tr and 2 more DC. The Tr is taller and forms the corners. The XDC is used but not specifically identified in Rnd 4 and others where you skip a stitch, DC and then make a DC in the skipped stitch. That forms the XDC. I think But Iโ€™m a knitter who has only been dabbling in crochet for a short time.
  3. Hi! I love this cat hammock and want to make it for my friendโ€™s Ginger Kitty. In the pattern, is Tr the abbreviation for the crossed double crochet? Thanks!
