Crochet Stitches Using Only Single Crochet and Double Crochet

One of the first stitches that a new crocheter learns is usually the Single Crochet. It is simple and makes a dense fabric. Because it is a smaller stitch, the fabric doesn’t grow as quickly as other stitches. This is probably why many crocheters move on to the Half Double and the Double Crochet stitches – for the height.

Isn’t the Jewelry Saver clever and cute? Today I am focusing on the happy medium and stitches that use only combinations of double crochet stitches and/or single crochet stitches. All of these stitches are visually appealing and easy to learn. The patterns are all easy to follow and work up quickly!

1. The Blanket Stitch is a simple, three-stitch repeat that is sure to fit the bill for just about any crochet project โ€“ especially blankets. It is comprised of both the single and double crochet in a way that creates a subtle texture that is perfect for baby blankets such as Sonny’s Baby Blanket.

2. The Thicket Stitch (aka The Suzette Stitch) is a beautiful stitch that has texture and it also only uses the single and double crochet stitches. Because of the tighter weaved fabric that the Thicket Stitch creates, it works wonderful for everyday crochet such as washcloths and wearables. I loved the warmth of this stitch so much that I made both the Easy Crochet Dog Sweater for Large, X Large, and XX Large Dogs and the Dandy Dog Sweater using it.

3. The Lemon Peel Stitch simply alternates the Single and Double crochet stitches across each row; single, double, single, double, etc. It really is that easy! This stitch creates a beautiful effect, similar to a lemon rind โ€“ hence the name. I love this stitch so much that I have made quite a few patterns with it including the Layering Hooded Vest and the Everyday Tank.

4. The V-Stitch is a crochet technique that combines Double Crochets and Chain Stitches. It is super easy to do and creates an open and airy fabric. It can also be used as a base for other stitches, such as the Crocodile Stitch. I loved the airiness of the stitch and used it for the Voluminous Tank and the kid’s version, the Tunic Tank Top.

5. The Granny crochet stitch is one of the most popular crochet stitches. We can use it to make everything fromย Granny Squares to cardigans. The Granny Stitch in Flat Rows, is gorgeous as a blanket, but why stop there? It can be made into so many things and my favorite useful item is the Granny Stitch Water Bottle Holder. Perfect for taking on hikes or perusing a new city.

6. The Arcade Stitch is a reversible stitch that creates waves of arches and fans out of Double Crochets. The arches stack over the fan’s downward points, which forms V-shaped dips that highlight the arches. The holey fabric is perfect for warmer weather items, such as the bottom layer in the Perfect Parfait Three Tier Tank Top.

How to Crochet the Argyle Shell Stitch

7. The Argyle Shell stitch is gorgeous and lightweight. This pretty stitch uses Chains, Double Crochets, and Single Crochets in a way that is airy and perfect for summer tops and beach cover ups! Myย Shell Yeah! Tunic showcases this stitch perfectly and works as both a coverup or paired with a solid colored tank top underneath.

8. If you love the height of the Double Crochet, and an open stitch, then the Grid Stitch is your new best friend. Comprising of Double Crochets, Single Crochets, and Chains, this stitch works great for wearables in indeterminate weather or items that you want to have a mesh like stitch. The Grid Cardi is a lightweight, over-sized cardigan that is perfect to wear during the cooler months. The Grid Slouch Hat andย Off the Grid Ear Warmer were both born of a necessity to cover my head, but not too much. Want something that isn’t a wearable? The Yoga Mat Bag fits an average size yoga mat and has a drawstring cord that doubles as a strap.

How to Crochet the Bobble Stitch

9. Theย Bobble Stitch is a fun crochet stitch that will add pizzazz to your next crocheted piece. Itโ€™s easier than it looks and is just a simple use of Double Crochets to create a 3-D effect. This stitch is often used to write out letters in graphgans. When I designed the Penelope the Pin Sharpening Octopus I knew I needed something to really set off the tentacles and I think the Bobble Stitch nailed that texture.

10. Similar to the Bobble Stitch, the Popcorn Stitch creates a round ball, or oval, that looks like a popped popcorn kernel. One of my most loved blankets, the Sangria Sorbet Blanket, showcases this stitch in such a stunning way. Comprised of Double Crochets, this stitch is a bit of a yarn eater, but so worth it.

cluster ripple blanket

11. If you can Double Crochet Two Together (Dc2tog) (tutorial here), then you can do the Cluster Stitch that is used in the Cluster Ripple Blanket. This gorgeous blanket has an easy to memorize 2 row repeat and the waves that the ripples create is so calming.

Brick stitch crochet pattern

12. The Brick stitchย is remarkably simple to crochet and gives great texture. If you can make a Double crochet and a Single crochet, you can crochet the Brick Stitch! With the popularity of Bucket Hats, I made my first one using the easy Brick Stitch. The Brickhouse Bucket Hat is a free crochet pattern that has texture, is super chic, and is easy to crochet as well!

13. The Shell Stitch is another stitch that has a light and breezy feel to it. Because it is comprised of Double Crochets and Chain Stitches, the fabric grows quickly. The open stitch comes together so beautifully and works great for wearables and anything else that you want an airy stitch. To showcase this wonderful stitch, I used it for my Shady Shell Cocoon. The Cocoon is like a warm hug on a cool day and is so stylish.

Tips for Adding a Border in Crochet

14. One of my absolute favorite borders is the Reverse Shell. Not only does it give it a pretty scalloped edge, it can be used to finish blankets, dresses, skirts, pretty much anything that you want to give the edge just a little something more. The Reverse Shell using Double Crochet and the Reverse Shell using Single Crochet are so much easier than they look. They are just repeats of Double Crochets and Single Crochets, with clever turns of the work that give the shells their overlapping appearance.

15. The Open Ripple Blanket is another stitch that utilizes the Dc2tog = Double Crochet Two Together in a way that makes a beautiful Chevron design that is open and airy. This Open Ripple Chevron Blanket is perfect for cuddling up on the couch and features a simple, two row repeat that uses a combination of Single Crochetย andย Double Crochet stitches. One row we will do single crochet, then the next weโ€™ll do a mix of double crochet and chains. How easy is that??
