Let’s make one using this free pattern!

Stuffable Travel Pillow Free Crochet Pattern

When traveling, are you frequently worried about how you’re going to get everything back home? Especially if you’re flying, having enough room in your suitcase (or being under the weight limit) can be a struggle for some. You have to spend money on another bag to take things home, and/or pay the baggage fees associated with excess baggage, which really adds up!

Now we have a neck pillow for traveling that uses your own clothing as the stuffing. YES! Pack this flat, stuff-able travel pillow in your suitcase on your way there, then on the way back you can fill it with dresses, shirts, extra clothing that didn’t get worn, etc. This is an excellent way to free up space in your luggage!

For this space saving travel pillow, we are using the Craft Cotton from Herrschners. This is a worsted weight cotton that feels great and is durable. We only need four skeins, and they have an excellent selection of neutral or bright colors that will fit with any suitcase or luggage set color combo. I used the “silverware” colorway and the gray has a gorgeous sheen. See all of the colors here.

You can also grab a whole CONE of the Craft Cotton here, which comes with a whopping 743 yards! That’s more than enough for one travel pillow AND a washcloth or something similar! Stay tuned for another travel related EASY project that will also help to save your time and sanity.

On my most recent trip, I stuffed my space saving travel pillow full of dresses and other clothes. This is what I was able to fit in my travel pillow:

2 – long dresses
1 – pantsuit romper
1 – thin hoodie
1 – tank top
1 – swimsuit
1 – swimsuit coverup

Holy moly! That’s a lot of stuff and space NOT taking up room in my suitcase. WINNING!

Wanna see it in action? There is a video of me stuffing the travel pillow here and a video of me unpacking it here.

Other cottons that would work well for this project would be Dishie from WeCrochet, Herrschners Cottage Cotton, Premier Cotton Sprout, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, or any other worsted weight cotton or cotton blend.

This packable travel pillow is the perfect gift for the person in your life that loves to travel. Perhaps someone that is chronically overpacked? This at least gives them a fighting chance of getting all of their belongings home without paying extra fees. Let’s make one!

The slip stitches in round 19 help to keep the seam from turning. Make sure the last double crochet stitch goes INTO the slip stitch itself.

  1. Hi, Great pattern and idea. Super useful. I have one question: what are the measurements of round 1 to 18? (Before starting rounding it). I think my DC are a bit shorter. Mine are 7'' 1/4 and I think it's a bit short. Can you also give me the measurements of the round flat? Thanks
    1. Hello! It sounds like you are right on track. After 18 rounds, it should measure 7.25" tall and when laid flat about 7.5" wide.
  2. Hi! I'm currently crocheting this stuffable travel pillow (great idea by the way!), but I'm a bit stuck on how to crochet the single crochets after the slip stitches. Do you crochet the single crochets in both loops of the slip stitches, just the back loops or do you go one round below into the single crochets? It's the one thing I can't quite figure out. :) Thanks in advance!
    1. Hi Cece! You can...but acrylic tends to stretch out more and lose it's shape over time, which is why I used and suggest cotton.
    1. Hello! No, there is not a video tutorial for this pattern, but if you need clarification on something, feel free to email sarah@hearthookhome.com for support.

  3. Thank you so much , what a wonderful idea, can’t wait to crochet this pattern, for my next mini vacation,
  4. Hi! Awesome pattern and idea! Thank you! I have two questions: It’s crocheted in the round right? The pictures show the ends with a different ribbing can you explain it? Thank you very very much!
    1. Hi Patricia! Yes, this pattern is worked in joined rounds. I am not sure what you mean by different ribbing on the ends...both ends of the pillow are regular dc with the chain lengths for the ties weaved through both the first and last rows.
  5. Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I'll crochet a few for donation purpose . Brilliant idea! Big hug from México!
