Do you have a new little one coming into your life? Perhaps your own child, a friend’s, a sibling’s, or you are being blessed with a new grandbaby or great grandbaby. No matter the reason, it’s time to celebrate with a gender-neutral baby blanket!

Great Gender-Neutral Crochet Baby Blankets

With almost half of all parents to be choosing to not find out the gender of their baby before birth, nowadays it is often hard to make a baby blanket before a baby is born. A lot of parents are also choosing gender neutral nursery themes such as Woodland animals, neutral colors, Nautical, and zoo and safari animals.

To cut out some of the guess work, I’ve compiled a list of gender neutral crochet stitches with some simple and easy to follow patterns. Any parent to be is sure to love a blanket made from these stitches.

If the parents have a color scheme already, these patterns will all look great in those colors. If they don’t, some great neutral colors choices are Sage Green, Gray, Sunny Yellow, Turquoise, and Burnt Orange.

  1.  The Pique Stitch  If you are looking for a crochet stitch that works up quickly, this stitch is for you! It is as tall as a double crochet stitch but twice as wide. The texture is beautiful and the drape is lovely. The Pique-A-Boo Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern is great pattern to practice this stitch on and as can be seen below, looks great in gender neutral colors.

2. The Alpine Stitch  I fell in love with the Alpine Stitch the first time I used it and when you use 2 complementing colors it really makes the stitch definition pop. The Alpine Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern is so soft to cuddle with that as the baby grows it can be a comfort blankie for a toddler to carry around and snuggle with.

3. The Blanket Stitch  This is a simple three stitch repeat that is easy to master and gives great straight edges, which makes adding a border even easier. Sonny’s Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern is perfect for binge watching your favorite show or listening to an audiobook. Babies will love running their hands over the subtle texture and it is so warm to be cuddled in.

4. The Tunisian Full Stitch The Full Stitch is so plush and gorgeous and it reminds me a bit of the Moss Stitch in regular crochet. The Tweed and True Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern looks great in neutral or bright, fun colors, especially when using a slow color changing yarn. Add on a Reverse Shell Crochet Border in a solid color and you will have a treasured keepsake.

5. Corner to Corner (C2C) in the Round  What I love best about this stitch is that once you get started it is a breeze and you can just keep going until you’ve reached the size that you want. Another option is to make individual squares and seam them together, as in the Behemoth Blanket Crochet Pattern. Lastly, if you have leftover yarn, you can make a matching lovey like the Whale of a Lovey Crochet Pattern.

6. The Tunisian Chevron Stitch  The Chevron Stitch is a staple in every crocheter’s repertoire, and a Chevron Blanket is timeless and will be passed down for years. Now you can choose whether you want a Tunisian Chevron Baby Blanket or a Traditional Crochet Chevron Baby Blanket. Have a “Rainbow Baby” that you are making a blanket for? 7. Moss Stitch Granny Square The Moss Stitch is a great stitch for beginners because you only need to know how to make a chain and the single crochet. The fabric created always has a great drape because of the way the stitches are formed with those chain spaces keeping things nice and airy. With this tutorial, that doubles as a pattern, you get to choose whether to make individual squares and seam them together, or just to keep on going until you reach the size that you want. Use a variegated yarn to really make the colors stand out.

8. The Tunisian Honeycomb Stitch The Tunisian Honeycomb stitch is a simple stitch repeat, that when offset, creates a gorgeous, honeycomb texture. Juliet’s Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern utilizes this beautiful stitch and can even double as a nursing coverup with the optional strap included in the free pattern. The strap itself can also double as a pacifier clip if/when not nursing!

9. The Waffle Stitch  I just love the texture of this stitch and babies will too. It is squishy and as intimidating as it may look, it is relatively easy and beginner friendly. Comprising of just strategically placed double crochets and front post double crochets, this Waffle Stitch Blanket Crochet Pattern is a favorite to cuddle up with and you may end up making an adult sized one for yourself.

10. Creighton’s Blanket: Stitch Sampler Crochet Pattern  Sometimes you don’t want to stick to just one repeating stitch. A stitch sampler is perfect for breaking up the monotony of those times. With Creighton’s Blanket you have 7 different stitches to choose from and you can customize them any way that you want. Make all 7 stitch squares, just a couple different ones, or make all of the squares in just one stitch. The options are endless!

Once you have your Baby Blanket complete you will need to decide if you want to add a border. A border just ties everything together nicely and can help hide uneven edges that some stitches inevitably have. Some of my favorite borders are the Reverse Shell Stitch, Crab Stitch, and the Picot Stitch.

I hope that you found inspiration for your next baby blanket. One thing that I love about a good gender neutral blanket is that you can make extras to store away for future (or last minute) gifts or surprise pop-ins from loved ones with babies.
