Almond Ridges Cloth: Free Cloth Crochet Pattern in Three Sizes

Have you used this Almond Ridge stitch before? It is absolutely gorgeous, and a breeze to whip up. This new stitch is featured in the Almond Ridges Cloth patterns, the May installment of my 2020 Cloth Series.

I am in love with the way these stitches create that almond effect. The ups and downs, similar to a wave pattern, are calming to look at and relaxing to crochet.

During the year of 2020, on the second Friday of the month, I will publish a NEW cloth pattern featuring Dishie cotton yarn. The cloths from month to month will stay the same size. This is particularly helpful if you decide to use an acrylic yarn and then sew them all together at the end of the year for a baby blanket, throw, or full size blanket.

As with the other months in this series, all cloths are the same size.

Cloth sizes:

5.5″ x 5.5″ – great for a face cloth or for showering

11″ x 11″ – average washcloth size

18″ x 12″ – dish drying mat, place mat, dusting cloth etc.

Materials:

Dishie Cotton (Jalapeno colorway pictured)
-approx. 32 yards for small
-approx. 126 yards for medium
-approx. 230 yards for large

In order to make all three of these cloths, I used about just over two skeins of the Dishie cotton yarn.

Crochet hook in size H/5mm

Gauge: 14.5 sts x 16 rows = 4″ square

Pattern Notes:

The chain at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch.

Place the first stitch of each row in the same stitch as turning chain.

BLO = Back Loop Only

On the slip stitches, try to stay a bit looser so they are easier to work into on the subsequent rows.

Pattern written using US terms.

For the last stitch ONLY of the row, I like to go through both loops instead of BLO. I think it keeps the edges more uniform and doesn’t distort the integrity of the stitches.

Small cloth:

Row 1: Ch-21, Sl st in 2nd chain from hook and in the next 3 sts. * Hdc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (20)

Row 2: Ch-1, turn, sl st in first 4 sts, * hdc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (20)

Rows 3 – 4: Ch-1, turn, hdc in first 4 sts. * sl st in next 4 sts, hdc in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (20)

Row 5 – 6: Ch-1, turn, sl st in first 4 sts, * hdc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (20)

Rows 7 – 22: Repeat rows 3 – 6 four more times.

Border: Ch-1, turn, sl st in BLO of each st across top, 2sc in corner. Rotate and sc evenly across row ends, 2sc in corner st. Sl st in BLO of each st across, 2sc in corner st. Rotate and sc evenly across row ends, sc in same as beginning. Join with Invisible Join.

Medium cloth:

Row 1: Ch-45, Sl st in 2nd chain from hook and in the next 3 sts. * Hdc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (44)

Rows 3 – 4: Ch-1, turn, hdc in first 4 sts. * sl st in next 4 sts, hdc in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (44)

Row 5 – 6: Ch-1, turn, sl st in first 4 sts, * hdc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (44)

Rows 7 – 42: Repeat rows 3 – 6 nine more times.

Border: Ch-1, turn, sl st in BLO of each st across top, 2sc in corner. Rotate and sc evenly across row ends, 2sc in corner st. Sl st in BLO of each st across, 2sc in corner st. Rotate and sc evenly across row ends, sc in same as beginning. Join with Invisible Join.

Large cloth:

Row 1: Ch-69, Sl st in 2nd chain from hook and in the next 3 sts. * Hdc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 sts * repeat between * * to end. (68)

Rows 7 – 50: Repeat rows 3 – 6 eleven more times.
