Crocheting a dog bed is easy to do. All we need to create is two squares (or rectangles) the same size of our desired foam insert. We’ll have to stretch the square to make it fit but that’s exactly what we want.
Start by selecting which size of foam you’ll need. You most likely want to use foam that is 3″ thick. Much of what you find online for foam pads are 1 or 2″ thick so pay attention when selecting your dimensions.
I chose to get a 30″ wide foam pad that is 72″ long so that I can cut it to size and make TWO beds: a smaller dog bed for my 20-lb girl, Cher, and a larger one for my boyfriend’s dog, Maisey.
The Mainstays Chenille yarn is the perfect yarn to use for this pattern. It is a huge yarn that works up fast and doesn’t snag easily. Great for crocheting dog beds!
For this huge yarn we need a huge hook. I am using the 25mm hook from my Tunisian hook set because my new jumbo Furls hooks haven’t been delivered yet.
We are using the single crochet stitch which means that this crochet dog bed pattern is beginner-friendly and easy to make.

Sizes: (small, large) = (24″ wide, 30″ wide)
Pattern:
Make twoโฆ
Row 1: Ch-(19, 23), sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each to end. (18, 22)
Rows 2 through (19, 23) or until desired length is reached: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st to end. (18, 22)
Fasten off first. Do NOT fasten off second.
Weave in all ends using a small crochet hook to feed through the stitches.
Assembly:
Position squares on top of each other with wrong sides touching. Sc through both thicknesses all the way around, placing 2sc in each corner st. Insert the foam square or rectangle after two sides are seamed. Youโll need to stretch to get that last side completed but you want it nice and tight!
Join to top of first stitch and weave in all ends.
