I told my husband that I was going to write a post about not buying flowers as a Mother’s Day gift. His response? “But women love flowers!”

Gift Ideas for Frugal Mothers

Here’s the thing: Every time Paul buys me flowers I cringe. He knows that I don’t care forย flowers as a gift. Not that I dislike flowers exactly, and its not that I don’t appreciate the gift, or the idea, or the thought… yada yada yada.

The first three things that pop into my mind:

Oh, how pretty!
But how much were they?!
They’re just going to die…

In that order. Just being honest.

Wanna save this for later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it when you're ready.

I understand that I may be in the minority onย this, but as a budget-conscious frugal mother and frugal wife, flowers and gift giving in general are the last thing on my list of wants for Mother’s Day. Give me something I can USE or something that I WANT that I don’t necessarily want to spend the money on. Not $40 flowers that will only look pretty for a few days or a week if I’m lucky.

I would much rather receive a handmade item from my boys, something small from my Amazon Wish List, a coupon booklet with coupons inside for a free foot rub from my hubby or from my kids – one on each foot! ๐Ÿ™‚ – or a coupon for breakfast in bed, or a gift card to Michael’s (that heย bought at Dillons {Kroger} earning Fuel Points!) so I can buy myself some yarn without feeling guilty.

Better yet? Start a tradition! Buy one beautiful fake flower and one well written Mother’s Day card. Reuse them every. single. year. Sign the card every year in a different place. After a few years it will be the highlight of Mother’s Day, remembering each and every time the same flower and card has been gifted, over and over and over again.

By the time my boys are grown, and Paul pulls out that flower and that card – with all of the Mother’s Day wishes I’ve received over the years – now THAT is a Mother’s Day gift I can get behind! Will be my most cherished gift of all – and frugal to boot! ♥

Happy Mother’s Day, Mommas!

  1. You have put to virtual paper what I have told my family for years! Mine got the drift quickly....hope yours do too!
  2. Well, your idea of the revolving Mother's Day flower/card brought tears to my eyes. My kiddos are 21 and 19 now. Wish I'd had that beautiful idea years ago.
