Grilling Apron: A Free Crochet Pattern

If there’s one thing I know about summer, it is that my family will be grilling out at least twice a week. This new, free crochet pattern for a Grilling Apron is the perfect gift for the grill-master in your life!
Grilling Apron Crochet Pattern
In our home, the kitchen is located on the main floor and the grill is located out back, and down a flight of stairs. Depending on what you’re cooking, carrying all of the necessary grilling accoutrements in one load (not to mention a plate or platter) can be cumbersome or flat-out impossible.
This Grilling Apron pattern is equipped with a sturdy strap, four medium sized pockets, and one large pocket to aid in all your grilling needs. The medium pockets are great for your meat thermometer, cheese singles, to hold your beverage while you flip the burgers or baste your meat, a cell phone, or whatever else you fancy. The large pocket is plenty large enough for either a bottle of BBQ sauce, your favorite dry rub, tongs, etc.
Since this is using Comfy Worsted, a delicious blend of cotton and acrylic from WeCrochet, we can wash the apron as often as needed.
Materials:
Comfy Worsted yarn (cotton acrylic blend)
-approx. 565 yards
Crochet hook in size G/4mm
Gauge: 14 sts x 14 rows = 4” square

For this pattern we are using the Thicket (Suzette) Stitch – tutorial here
Start with Foundation Single Crochet (an alternate is included in the pattern)
The turning chain does not count as a stitch.

Apron body:
Row 1: Fsc-75 (or you can Ch-76, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each to end) (75)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, (sc, dc) in first st. * sk next st, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * 35 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (75)
Rows 3 – 42: Ch-1, turn, * (sc, dc) in next st, sk next st * repeat between * * 36 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (75)
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Strap:
Leave a ~6″ beginning tail for sewing…
Row 1: Ch-80, looking at the “right side” of apron back, sc in each st across apron top then ALSO Ch-81. (236)
Row 2: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch/st to end. (235)
Rows 3 – 8: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st to end. (235)

Fold strap in half lengthwise and sc stitch for stitch until you reach the apron body.
Rotate and place one sc in each row end down to the bottom right corner, 3sc in corner stitch. Rotate again and sc in each st across, 3sc in corner st. Sc in each row end up to strap.
Line up the strap stitches so that you’ll end with no extra stitches on one side or the other.
Sc together to end. Fasten off and, using yarn tails from the beginning and end, sew both ends of the apron strap shut.
Sew flap down as pictured and weave in all ends.
Small Pockets (make 4):
Row 1: Fsc-21 (or you can Ch-22, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each to end) (21)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, (sc, dc) in first st. * sk next st, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * 8 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (21)
Rows 3 – 16: Ch-1, turn, * (sc, dc) in next st, sk next st * repeat between * * 9 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (21)
Row 17: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st to end. (21)
Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.
Large Pocket (make one):
Row 1: Fsc-27 (or you can Ch-28, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each to end) (27)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, (sc, dc) in first st. * sk next st, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * 11 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (27)
Rows 3 – 34: Ch-1, turn, * (sc, dc) in next st, sk next st * repeat between * * 12 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (27)
Row 35: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st to end. (27)
Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.
Construction:
Lay out completed apron and position the pockets. Pin them into place if you like, or just sew them on as evenly as possible making sure the top two corners of each pocket are particularly well-sewn.
Weave in all ends and voila! You have a completed Grilling Apron ready for all your grilling needs. I’ll be giving this one to my husband before Father’s Day, but I bet the grill-master in your life would love one, too!
