Wanting to learn how to change colors in crochet? Changing colors can be a daunting and intimidating task but it does not have to be! With one simple technique the process is simple and as painless and as beautiful as possible.

When I was brand new to crochet, I planned my projects around one skein of yarn. As in: if it takes more than one skein, I’m not doing it. It worked well until I moved on from scarves and dish cloths to more exciting projects like gloves and amigurumi. Now changing colors (or even adding a new skein of the same color) is a breeze – and I’ll show you how!

The method for changing colors is the same no matter what stitch you’re using; single crochet, double crochet, half double or the triple crochet stitch. Any crochet stitch, really. The trick? Always change your yarn color on the LAST pull through of the LAST stitch of that color. Let’s say that again.

When completing a crochet stitch, you will have two loops on your hook (or three when working half double). Instead of finishing that stitch with the first color, you’re going to pull through and complete that stitch using the NEW yarn color. Want to see a video of it in action? Let’s do it!

Easy peasy, right? Use the same method when adding a new skein of yarn (even in the same color) if you’re making a large project and you’ll never go back to a simple knot again. Of course, you may have some extra ends to weave in, so you’ll want to make sure you’re getting them woven in correctly. We’ve got a tutorial for that as well!

  1. Thank you so much. I have been crocheting for about 50 years and changing colors has always been a pain. I either avoid changing colors or tie the two colors in a knot which isn’t always perfect. And I hate weaving in ends. Your way is, by far, the easiest, neatest and smoothest way to change colors. I wish I had found this years ago! ❤️
