Do you remember the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books that were so popular in the 1980s and 1990s? Where you turn to such and such page to read the character doing one thing, and another page if you want them to do the other? It was so fun to flip the pages and discover the possibilities, then start all over again and try a different way. That is exactly what we are doing with this NEW Beach Waves pattern!

Beach Waves Tank Top

For this pattern everyone will start by crocheting the torso first, then we’ll take a break to add the straps. At this point you are able to decide #1) how long to make your tank top. (I personally like mine a bit longer.) #2) if you would like to continue on to make a swimsuit coverup, OR take it all the way to the floor for a gorgeous full length dress. ♥

We are using the gorgeous Comfy Fingering that is a 75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic blend. This is a size 1/fingering yarn and is perfect for this pattern because of the high content of cotton – a fiber that does not stretch much while also allowing the wearer to stay cool.

Beach Waves Dress Pattern

I decided that instead of sewing a lining into this dress, that I would purchase an inexpensive slip to wear underneath. I found these slips for less than $15 and I just love them! They run true to size and I got both the white and the black. They are so comfy!

Sizing: (XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)

Measure your bust and hips, then use the larger of the two. For example, if my bust is 45″ and my hips are 46″, I would find where the 46″ hits on the chart, and see that I need to make the XL size.

Gauge:

One wave = 3โ€ wide and 1.75โ€ tall (including sc rows)
*see gauge pattern and VIDEO tutorial here

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

If you need help reading a crochet pattern, make sure you head over here and check out this detailed post.

You get to choose whether you will make the tank top OR the coverup/dress.

While you are making the first half of the pattern, it is completely normal for it to feel like it is WAY too big. After adding the โ€œtopโ€ and then blocking, the stitches/rows will get taller and the dress/tank/coverup will get slimmer.

The blocking process (and the weight) makes the garment “grow” in length, but only by about 10 – 20%. For this reason, I do recommend NOT completely fastening off until you have blocked the garment. Then, if you decide you need a bit more length, that can easily be added.

This pattern is available on both Ravelry and Etsy. Thank you!

  1. Hi Ashlea... I recent purchase this pattern to make the tank top. I'm making the small size. The beginning is looking so so big. I measured it at 44" a round. Does thus sound correct? I don't want to go any further if I'm on the wrong track. Can you advise me please?
  2. It's it normal for the beginning chain to seem Really big? Like would wrap around me twice possibly. My gauge was fine.
    1. Hi Miranda! While you are making the first half of the pattern, it is completely normal for it to feel like it is WAY too big. After adding the โ€œtopโ€ and then blocking, the stitches/rows will get taller and the dress/tank/coverup will get slimmer
  3. Hi Ashley, I've been getting your newsletter for awhile and I LOVE your patterns! I've learned so much from your articles and tutorials. I was wondering if you have any patterns for a tank top that you can wear alone? Like, without a camisole? Or is that a silly question? Also, does anyone know of some lightweight + soft + non-hot cotton blend yarns for summer wear? (fingering or light fingering weight) I've been looking for the right one but would love some recommendations.
  4. Hi Ashley, I would like to use Loin Brand Coboo yarn to make this dress/swimsuit cover. It is a DK 3 weight bamboo/cotton blend and has amazing drape. If I can match the gauge do you think the yarn will work out? This will be for my granddaughter who is 25!
  5. Hi Ashley, do you think Lion Brand Amazing Lace would be good for this pattern? I love all of them but the long dress is gorgeous. Thanks, Terry
