Don’t you love those double thick hot pads we always used to have around the house growing up? Now that I can crochet my own hot pads, I have roughly a dozen of them floating around. Great to use as hot pads for getting casserole out of the oven, or trivets for family get togethers. Use this free crochet pattern to make a Tunisian Crochet double thick hot pad!

Tunisian Hot Pad Pattern

Earlier this year I shared a basic Double Thick Hot Pad crochet pattern using a regular crochet stitch with you that has gone over very well. I’m glad everyone loves it as much as I do! I love this type of folding hot pad because it only uses one skein of yarn, it’s double thick to protect our fingers in the kitchen, plus they work up so fast!

Someone asked if I had made a Tunisian Crochet version of that hot pad, and the answer was no… not YET! So here we are with a very basic, beginner-friendly double thick hot pad crochet pattern using Tunisian Crochet in the round.

For this design we are using the Tunisian crochet in the round technique. This would be a great first Tunisian in the round project because it doesn’t matter if it’s a little wonky. It will most likely still work just fine. 😉

Use one color for a simple (dare I say classy?) hot pad as pictured on the left above or use two colors to create this gorgeous peekaboo effect with the stitches as pictured on the right. This requires no extra effort, just a complimenting yarn color!

Learn how to crochet Tunisian in the round using this comprehensive tutorial, then come back and make one of these hot pads using the free pattern below.

I have included two sizes for this pattern. The smaller starts with 30 stitches and the larger with 50 stitches. That being said, you can make your hot pad as small or as large as you like. To determine the finished size of your hot pad, know that the beginning chain will be running along the diagonal. So think bottom left to top right (or visa versa).

After establishing the first round of Tunisian crochet we’ll simply continue working in a spiral until, when folded, the hot pad insides line up. When you reach that point, slip stitch around to finish off the Tunisian stitches and then seam the hot pad shut. Easy peasy!

Technically you could use any Tunisian Crochet stitch you like to make these hot pads. I like the colorwork when using the Simple Stitch, but it would also look great with the Honeycomb, the Reverse, or the Yarn Over Lace etc. See more Tunisian Crochet stitch options here.

Now let’s get to the pattern!

For this double thick Tunisian crochet hot pad pattern we are using a 100% cotton yarn for heat resistance and durability. Any worsted weight cotton yarn will suffice. My favorite is Dishie from WeCrochet. Read an entire comparison ofย all cotton yarn brands, textures, and values here.

Materials:

Worsted weight 100% cotton (or cotton macrame cord) in two contrasting colors
-approx. (55, 90) yards total – if using two colors you’ll need majority “forward pass” yarn color.

Backward Pass as normal: Ch-1 to start the Backward Pass, then * YO pull through two loops* for the remainder of the pattern.

Note that you may want to knock off the stitches in the Backward Pass more frequently than you normally would with Tunisian Crochet in the Round, especially when going around those right corners in the first few rounds where the stitches can get tight.

Tunisian Double Thick Hot Pad:

Round 1: Ch-(30, 50), pull up a loop in each ch to end. Backward Pass these stitches off the hook, rotate to work up the opposite side of the chain. pull up a loop in each st to end. Backward Pass. (60, 100)

*you may find it easiest to use the BLO (back loop only) when making that first stitch after rotating to work up the opposite side of the chain. Otherwise you’ll need to drape the beginning yarn tail over the working yarn so that you are able to pull up that loop.

Rounds 2 through (15, 20) or until the insides line up nicely when folded in half diagonally continue working in a spiral, TSS in each st around. Backward Pass. (60, 100)

When ready to seam the hot pad together… yarn over and pull through both loops (one loop of Backward Pass remaining on hook). Using โ€œforward passโ€ yarn, Tslst in each st around. Fasten off leaving a long enough tail for seaming.

If desired, make a chain ~5″ long for a hanger.

Sew the inside shut with the Invisible Shoulder seam method, using the TSS vertical bars for sewing. Weave in all ends. That’s it!
