How to Crochet the Picot Stitch

There are various ways to make this stitch, yet all of them are similar. The resulting effect will change based on where you place your hook and what stitch you use to close it. It is important to note that no matter how you close the stitch, the basic gist is the same, so if it looks good to you, roll with it! I’ll explain the difference (with photos) below.

To make a picot stitch:

1. Chain three.

First step of the picot

2. Insert hook into back of first chain made. (the one at the bottom, closest to the work)

second step of the picot stitch

3. Make a slip stitch OR a single crochet.

final step of the picot stitch

That’s it! The difference between the slip stitch and the single crochet is how pointy you want the picot to be. I find that if I use a single crochet the picot is a bit more round, if I use the slip stitch method the picot is more delicate – and also pointier.

I have used the picot stitch in my “Juliet’s Nursing Cover” pattern. I love the little points and how they really dress up the whole pattern!

I also used this stitch when adding the edging to my fabric scarf in this tutorial. Isn’t that such a beautiful edge and just so, so easy? Even if you’re adding this as an edging to a plain half double crochet or double crochet blanket, it will step that design up a notch and give it a professional, “finished” look.

The picot stitch adds pizzazz to literally any crocheted piece. Add it as a final edging on a wash cloth, a baby blanket, or a scarf for a decorative element. That’s what I love about crochet, the ability to customize and really make something mine! What will you use the basic picot stitch in today?
