10 Things You Should ALWAYS Look for at Thrift Stores

Who else loves shopping at thrift stores?! I grew up thrifting, partly out of necessity and then partly because my friends and I thought it was cool when we were in high school. Now I shop at thrift stores because I love the hunt and the bargain.
Miscellaneous items collected from a thrift store.

There were a few sketchy years in my adolescence during whichย I would classify my look as “wannabe punk”, wearing up to 20 necklaces per day matched with a random and now that I look back on it, oddย assortment of bell bottom pants and baseball jerseys. It’s better not to ask, and thank God weย don’t have pictures to share.

A seasoned thrift store shopper knows that not all thrift stores are created equal. I prefer the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) because they price per item, while Goodwill charges a set amount for every shirt, every pair of jeans etc – no matter what the condition, unless of course it’s super nice. Then they jack it up.

I really like the small town thrift stores, the ones that are stocked by members of a congregation or school as a fundraiser, and the ones that offer different discounts based on the day of the week and the color of the tag.

Locations matter as well! One branch of a Goodwill store may consistently have the best furniture while another across town may consistently have the best clothing.

10 Things You Should ALWAYS Look for at Thrift Stores

1. Artwork

Is it ugly or is it just…ย unique? Who cares really, half the time I’m just buying itย for the frame anyway. Something to re-purpose or paint and re-love which brings a new life to the piece. The older frames are always the coolest, and typically well built as well.

2. Books

I have always dreamed of owning a library. Not that the goal will ever come to fruition, but purchasing quality hard cover or interesting reads for pennies on the dollar? Sure!

3. Jeans

Some people give away the best jeans. Great brands, and many times with little wear at all. Last year I found a pair of $100 jeans (in my size!!!) priced atย just $4.98 at my favorite thrift store. I always always at least flip through the denim rack before moving on to the home decor department.

Nothing beats that feeling. That feeling whenย you turn around in the dressing room and your booty looks great, lifted and tucked, and at 95% off full retail.

4. Home Decor and Furnitureย

I have a plaster head. No, really. A plaster bust of a man that I do not know, have never met, and everyone that visits my home thinks is creepy. Come to think of it, it is slightly creepy since he is most likely long gone and was when I acquired him.

Paul learned early on that I will not budge on having my head prominently displayed.

I bought him when I was 14 years old at a thrift store/flea market for $10 and I named him Maximus. He has been with me over half of my life, seen me through several different apartments where we lived just the two of us, he’s been there for me when I’ve broken up with boyfriends, he’s been my guardian angel. It is what it is and I love him.

The point: some of my favorite home decor items have been purchased at thrift stores. Vintage vases or candle holders, styles are always coming back around. Finding chic place mats or tablecloths, an old clock or an old sewing table that can be freshened up with a little love and turned into a side table?

My favorite.

5. Dishesย

Dishes don’t have to match. In fact, I’ve been acquiring different fun and vintage plates and tableware to create a unique collection. Find a super cute dinner plate for 50ยข? Snatch it up! Buy them up as you come across them and before long you have a mish mash of super chic dishes.

Fun or interesting glasses can be used to plant flowers, or as a vase, or throw some rocks in the bottom of a wide vase and call itย a fish bowl. The possibilities are endless.

6. Toolsย

One thing Paul can never get enough of – tools. Different sizes, different drill bits, different brands… he wants them all. Finding them at a bargain only sweetens that deal.

7. Sportingย Equipmentย

Baseball bats, golf clubs and balls do not need to be purchased new. Baseball gloves are better when they’ve been broken in anyway!

8. Trays

Any kind of wooden tray or serving tray. Paint those puppies or use them as-is on your coffee table for a catch-all or to hold the remotes orย a few candles and coasters on your dining room table.

9. Costume Jewelry

A statement costume jewelry piece goes a long way, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Find a gemstone in the perfect shade of purple?

Snatch it up!

10. Suitcases

I’m thinking old suitcases here; the ones that you can use for home decor. Or actually use them for traveling if you are so inclined. Granted some won’t be in good enough shape to use confidently, but use it to store photos or greeting cards you can’t bear to throw away. Or stack them on top of each together toย make a super cute arrangement in your living room.

Did I miss anything?

Complete the circle of thrift store life by donating what you don’t need anymore yourself. If you do make donations, make sure to get a receipt for tax purposes! Now I’m in the mood to go thrifting. If I find something super cool, I’ll be sure to share!

  1. I always LOVE to visit your webpage? site, online space. I learn so much. That ONION trick with the panty hose is AWESOME!! Since the PANDEMIC I have become a SAVER of everything. I now know how my parents felt when they grew up during and after the Great Depression. LOVE your tips on the Thrift stores. My oldest daughter taught me about thrift stores!! She got a $300.00 skirt (piece of cloth as I call it) for $20.00!! We Looked the maker up on Google and saw it there!! I've been SOLD ever since!!! Thanks for your Tips n savings tips n patterns and TIME it takes to put it all together for us. Susie
  2. I love looking for denim and funky jackets at thrift stores, also glassware and books. My best finds ever were a thigh length crocheted vest made of a fingerling weight yarn and a nearly new leather biker jacket. I Googled the label on the jacket and it's upward of $400 new - I paid $2.00 for it. Love, love LOVE thrift stores!
  3. Another use for the suitcases is as yarn storage. I have 2 suitcases in use and they are so much easier to move and access than the bins are. They also stand upright in the closet and take up much less floor space than the bins do.
  4. Pie Plates make the best plant saucers. And you can't beat $1. Even plastic plant saucers cost more than that. Silver spoons and glass bowls. Oh, and baskets. Well, those are the things I am always hunting for at junk stores.
    1. Great tips! I'm headed to the thrift store over my lunch break so I'll be sure to scope those bins out. Thank you!
  5. Wow! I love this site! A friend sent me a link to you, saying you remind her of me. Be scared, Sis! I love thrifting and we go to great used junk stores all the time. My hubs and I make it a dinner date, spending at the restaurant what we saved at the junktique. ;) I, too, love frames and have two in the tramp art style, one, I believe, is the real deal, maybe both. I almost always buy sturdy things I can actually use, such as your suitcase idea. (Thanks!) I don't like a ton of useless things sitting around to dust. Even my birdhouse collection has set outdoors at time, and birds have inhabited most of them. One thing you did not mention that I love: hand-made lace. I have bedspreads, enormous tablecloths, shawls, and doilies, all hand made by someone, in love, for their posterity, and someone was too stupid to cherish it. I go there. I cherish it. Thanks for this amazing post/site. <3 K
    1. I love Lace. I cannot get enough of it. Lace is my favorite thing and has been since I can remember. I'm 62 and for 62 years now lace is the one thing I treasure. No matter where I shop, which isn't very much these days, but when I do I always keep an eye out looking for that special stuff...lace. When I'm handed down a bag of hand- me-downs I look for lace, ya never know....could be some in there. Going to thrift stores, goodwills or yard sales my main purpose is looking...trying to find one of my most treasured treasures.....Lace. It feels good, it comforts me, it looks good, it's sexy. I've taken lace off of old slips and have used it for a background and/or border to frame pictures, I've drapped it over mirrors, the backs of couches and chairs used it as dollies and runners on the dining room table. I love wearing it. I love feeling it and the way it feels in between my fingers or against my face, legs, arms, lips, ears or any of my other body parts. I love lace. Real lace, the good kind. The kind that feels the best and you can tell it's real just by the way it feels, is actually hard to find. If ever you are lucky enough to come across any, snag it, buy it, wheel and deal for it but do not leave without. Lace. One of the finner things life has to offer and a very favorite of mine. Teri
  6. I've been working on building a play kitchen for my soon to turn 3 year old. Almost everything in it has come from either a Thrift store or a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. It's amazing the awesome things you can find to be stove parts or dishwasher racks or refrigerator shelves in a mini-kitchen, if you use your imagination. I also found a lot of great tiny little pots and pans and bakeware, and a gorgeous green plastic cake stand that looks like fine crystal. Luck was really shining on me one day when I landed several Melissa & Doug play sets for less than $5 each, which look brand new without the $25-$50 pricetags. I have always loved thrifting, but haven't made a real habit of it, but I've now vowed to make time for it at least once a month this year just to see what I can find.
  7. This past year I have gone almost completely plastic free. The majority of my food is stored in glass found at goodwill. I also recently picked up a bunch of Christmas tins which I will be using for my baked goods as Christmas gifts. Love reducing my footprint!
    1. I love the Central & Edgemoor location. And 47th and Seneca is a favorite too. I found some great items at Goodwill in Derby this weeekend also. Love thrifting!
