Do you love gemstones, cool rocks, and crystals? If so, you’re in the right place because today we are making a super cute, super QUICK adjustable crochet pattern for gemstones. A great way to incorporate your love of crystals and crochet into your everyday routine.
Gemstone Holder: Free Adjustable Crochet Pattern
This free adjustable gemstone holder crochet pattern can be used to wear your favorite stones as a necklace, to hang crystals from your rearview mirror in your car, or for any purpose, really. I made a ton of them when writing the pattern and they work up so dang fast I couldn’t help myself! Before I knew it I had nearly a dozen of them. 🙈
Since I have so many of them now I am hanging a few around my plants and knick-knack areas. They add a pop of color and the fact that you can change out the gemstones as you wish is an awesome feature! This crystal stone holder is adjustable, meaning that it will fit many ~1″ stones, even those that are not uniform in shape.
If you don’t have a collection of gemstones yet, some great options for acquiring a quick variety of stones would be this assortment of different gemstones, or this pack of twenty assorted stones. Note that most of mine pictured for the pattern are in the 1/2″ to 1″ range.
I’m not a big jewelry person in general but I do like to wear stone jewelry, especially in the summer months. I have my favorite gemstones and wanted a way to fashionably wear them. This gemstone necklace pattern can be made in any color, using just scrap yarn amounts of several different yarn options (see more below for specific suggestions) and at any length you like. Perfection!
For example, I love my black one because I can choose to have a subdued stone like a hematite or onyx or tiger’s eye, or I could swap out the stone for something bright and fun like the rose quartz or citrine. Love that!
I timed myself while making these and from start to finish (because of course I did), and each one took me less than ten minutes. These would be an excellent item to sell at craft fairs, or to give as teacher appreciation gifts, or as a quick stocking stuffer… the list goes on.
As for the yarn needed to make our cute little adjustable gemstone holders, you’re going to want to use a strong fingering weight yarn. For some I used Curio #3, and for others I used Comfy Fingering, and for others I used less than one skein of embroidery floss each. I don’t particularly recommend the floss because of how slick it is, but it does work up beautifully!
Left to right: Curio #3 in “Navy”, Comfy Fingering in “Ivory”, Comfy Fingering in “Black”, and Curio #3 in “Bare”.
Both of these are embroidery floss.
Another embroidery floss version.
Basically any strong fingering weight yarn or #3 crochet thread would work great. As for yardage… you just need scraps!

You will also need beads to use for securing the holder around the stone. I strongly recommend wooden beads because they have rough edges on the inside that helps grip the yarn. I also recommend using the smallest size beads that will fit. You want it to be difficult to get the stone out so that it doesn’t pop out when you don’t want it to. An assorted sizes wooden bead set like this would be a great starting point, and plenty of beads to make a ton of holders!
To use the crochet crystal holder:
To use this adjustable gemstone holder, you’ll lay the crochet piece flat and put the stone in the net.
Wanna save this for later?
Lift both sides and pinch, pulling the bead down to the base to secure. Note that in the pattern we intentionally make one side of the chain base thicker than the other. This makes it harder to secure the bead, and thus helps to keep the bead from dislodging.
After you insert your gemstone and slide the bead down nice and tight, you’ll want to toss it around a bit to make certain that the stone is secure and will not dislodge. It is possible you may need to size down the pattern for your particular stone, so definitely make sure that that little baby isn’t going anywhere! If you’re still worried about the possibility of losing your gemstone, that’s ok! As with anything, if in doubt… sit this one out.
Instructions for sizing down are included below.
Materials:
Curio #3, Comfy Fingering, or Embroidery Floss (less than one skein)
Crochet hook in size 2mm
Gauge: unimportant
Sizing Down: if holder is too large for a particular stone, first try going down a hook size to a 1.5mm, or substitute double crochets for the treble crochet stitches.

Pattern:
Round 1: Ch-4, sl st to first ch made to form a circle. Ch-11 (counts as Tr + ch-7), [Tr in circle, ch-7] 3x. Join to 4th ch from beg ch. (four Trs separated by ch-7 sps)
Round 2, Part 1: sl st in next 3 chs, sc in next ch, ch-4, Tr in center ch of next ch-sp. Ch-50 (or to desired length). Fasten off.
Round 2, Part 2: Leaving a long tail, attach in center ch of next ch-sp. Using both ends of the yarn, ch-4. Using the working strand only, Tr in center ch of next ch-sp. Using both ends of the yarn, ch-6. Using the working strand only, ch-44 (or to same length as first side). Fasten off.
Weave in beg tail from round 1. Weave in the other yarn tail to further thicken up the base of the chain. Weave in and thicken the chain as much as you like. It will be covered by the bead when finished.
Add a bead to both strands that is somewhat tight and slide down the chains. Insert the gemstone and push the bead down to secure it. On the other end, tie the two yarn ends in a secure knot and clip ends. Voila!
