One garment you didn’t know you needed until now? The Wanderlust Shawl! This shawl is warm, it has pockets, and is perfect to wear over your favorite top. It’s a quick one to crochet, too!

Wanderlust Shawl with Pockets crochet pattern

The Wanderlust Shawl

This pocketed shawl crochet pattern is lightweight but substantial enough to offer extra warmth whether you’re poking around the house, headed to the supermarket, or gallivanting across the country. Because I love to travel, and because I’ll be taking this shawl with me everywhere we go, I decided to name it The Wanderlust Shawl. Did I mention it has pockets?! ๐Ÿ˜€

This shawl almost feels like a poncho with the warmth it provides. The open stitch work means that this works up quickly and the drape is to die for! I love how it stays on your shoulders rather than constantly falling down. So sleek and so chic!

From the front it almost looks as if it is a slouchy sweater and in the back it is just long enough to cover the waistline. I’m drooling over this yarn choice.

For this shawl pattern we are using Twill yarn from WeCrochet, the sister site to Knit Picks. This yarn is a gorgeous worsted weight, 100% Superwash Merino Wool. The sheen of this yarn is perfection and it feels so soft against your skin. It is bouncy, amazingly soft, and it is machine washable! We are pairing this yummy yarn with a 7mm crochet hook to create nice, open stitches that have a beautiful squish factor.

This pattern is available on Ravelry, Etsy, or in the Heart Hook Home shop Thank you! If you need help reading a crochet pattern, make sure you head over here and check out this detailed post.

  1. Finishing this shawl. Do the pockets go on the odd or even side of the shawl? Not sure if there is an inside or outside on this shawl. Thank you.
  2. Ashlea, I found the lovely Wanderlust shawl on Pinterest where it said the pattern was free and then the link sent me to a second site where they also listed the pattern as being free but now when I finally have a link for the pattern I have to buy the pattern first before I can get it. I wanted to make the Wanderlust shawl for my adult daughter because this is the first time in 30 yrs she has asked me to make her anything specific. Now I'm confused and frustrated, why would this pattern be listed as being a free pattern on 2 different sites if it isn't. I would greatly appreciate the link or address to the site where I can download the Wanderlust shawl pattern free of charge as I cannot afford to pay for it nor is it right or fair that Pinterest and the linked diy site list this pattern as being free. I appreciate your attention to this message and look forward to your reply. Sincerely Belinda MacDonald
      1. I'm sorry, but it is not a free pattern. Unfortunately I have no control on what other people say or put in their descriptions when they share my patterns.
        1. i also got super excited about this โ€œfree patternโ€ to be paywalled at the end. itโ€™s on a site under โ€œpocket shawl free crochet patternsโ€. maybe you could reach out to them to stop falsely advertising.
    1. Hi Brittany! You can...however it might turn out smaller, or, if you can match gauge, it might be a bit holey"er".
  3. Hi Ashlea! โ˜บ๏ธ Could you help me? I have a friend that I'm making another one of your Wanderlust Shawls for, but she would like it for her young daughter. If she wants it 12" shorter, how many rows would you recommend? Thank you for your time and patterns. 10/4/20
  4. I am really struggling with the second DC in the chain. I think that I am doing my chain 2 very loosely, but I need to use my thumbs to stretch the stitch to get the hook thru. Itโ€™s taking a long time......suggestions?
    1. Hi, I love the look of this shawl! I have a friend that is recovering from an accident and I want to make her something special that I could make quickly. I too am struggling with dc in sk st (2nd chain)stitch. Read through all of the comments to see if ANYONE is having the same issue as I am. I see many who are having problems with the pockets and I donโ€™t think I am even going to get to that point, because it is taking me to long to get through that stitch and I am about to throw in the towel. And I did my chains VERY loose. Any suggestions would be helpful
  5. I wish i could have this pattern , its beautiful, And also want the "Go with the Flow" poncho, too, :(
    1. Hi Carol! This pattern is available on ravelry here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/wanderlust-shawl
  6. Iโ€™m so confused. Iโ€™m on the pockets and have no clue what your pictures are showing. Am I supposed to attach from the bottom of the piece or from the top of the pocket? Did you make a video of this part? Thank you for any help and thank you for your patterns!
  7. Hi Ashlea! First off, I LOVE all your patterns! But for the life of me, I can not understand how to do the pockets. I understand that you are joining the pocket to the main piece as you go along, but I have looked at the photos and read and re-read the directions. I do not understand this part at all! Is there a video on how to attach the pockets? I didnโ€™t see one but that would be very helpful. I am so close to being done this gorgeous piece but unable to finish it! Please help!!
    1. Hi Michele! I am sorry you are struggling with the pockets. Unfortunately, I do not have a video for this, but if you would like you can email me at support@hearthookhome.com and we can try to get it figured out for you.
  8. Hi Ashlea, I am on the pockets of the wanderlust shawl. As you are crocheting are you attaching as you go along, meaning on all 3 sides? Or are you doing a call and attaching at the end? Thank you, Theresa
    1. Hi Theresa! You are working from the bottom of the pocket (which is attached) to the top, attaching the sides at the end of each row. Does that make sense?
  9. Ashlea, I have been crocheting on and off for years but i still feel like a beginner. I do more ripping than finishing. I just wanted to say you are a talented inspiration. From one Kansas girl to another "Bravo!"
