Do you like to go on long walks? Do you also love to crochet? No, this isn’t a dating ad… but I do think I’d like you! 🤣 If you love to walk and to crochet, you may be looking to make a crochet kit for walking and this post will walk you through making one. 😉

How to Make a Walking Crochet Kit

The first thing I do most mornings is to put on my tennis shoes and grab a crochet project or a ball of yarn and a hook. I head to one of my favorite parks and hit the pavement with my yarn fanny pack and I walk/crochet for about 1 hour and 40 minutes if I don’t get stopped. I walk four laps around the park which is just shy of 6 miles, and I crochet the entire time. I listen to audio books while I walk and get a good amount of crocheting done in the process. I have absolutely come to rely on what I call my “morning meeting routine” to get myself in a good head space and get my body moving and motivated to tackle the rest of the day.

Most mornings I see the same folks. We always say good morning and many times they ask what I’ve got on my hook that day. I carry business cards with me now, and I know that some of them check the blog occasionally because they make references to new posts or patterns that have recently been released. It is so much fun to get to know my neighbors that way, and to see the surprised looks on the faces of people that I have never run into before. I frequently get comments like… “now that’s multi-tasking at its finest”, or I get asked if I can chew gum as well. One guy asked if I crochet to the beat of my walking OR if I walk to the rhythm of my crocheting. To be honest it’s a little bit of both!

Some more questions I get about walking and crocheting…

What’s in my crochet walking kit?

Of course you’ll need a Fanny Pack. This is the exact one I use each day and it is specifically made for yarn. I don’t use the holes in the top, but you could if you like! It has a mesh pouch on the back side and a zippered pouch on the inside. It holds a lot for a walking yarn “tool kit”!

Inside of my fanny pack I have:

Stitch markers
Yarn Needle
Small scissors (or one of these cutting tools is nice!)
Retractable measuring tape keychain
Nail file
Pepper Spray (my boyfriend got me this particular one because if I use it, it immediately sends him a text message letting him know 1.) that I have used it, and 2.) my EXACT location)

If you want to have a practically ready-made walking crochet kit you could snag one of the fanny packs and one of these Basic Tool Packs. Done and Done! This walking tool kit for crocheting has pretty much everything I could need in that short amount of time.

Wanna save this for later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it when you're ready.

How did I get started crochet walking? In July of 2020 I changed my lifestyle habits. I had been overweight for years and I hated the way I felt. I starting eating better, logging what I ate in my FitBit app, and walking 3 miles each morning before starting my day. Over the course of the next six months I had dropped 60 pounds! I felt lighter, healthier, stronger, and more focused.

Here we are four years later and I am proud to say that I am maintaining that lifestyle. I still start my day with a walk, except now I walk six miles each day and I crochet the entire time. I also eat whatever I want, or however much I want, but I still choose healthier options most of the time.

What crochet projects do I walk with? I tend to start new projects on walks. I’ll either start something new, that I can work on before it gets too big, or I’ll work on something small, that I can start and perhaps finish in one walk. In fact, the entire 2023 One Skein Crochet Series was based around my tendency to work on small projects while I walk. I designed and crocheted almost all of them on my morning walk routine. Other times I work on gauge swatches for a new design to decide on a stitch or a hook size to use. Then when I get home I measure for gauge and start the math process of designing the new crochet pattern.

Introducing my NEW crochet video series… “What I’m Walkin’ With”

This is a new concept where each morning that I walk I will take a short video of my fanny pack before I get going, showing what yarn and hooks I’ve got with me. I’ll include a couple of clips as I’m walking of a part that shows the stitches well, or when I hit an angle that is simply perfection. Then when I am almost finished with my walk I’ll stop at the final bench before reaching my car and take a quick clip showing my progress for the day.

If there is a relevant crochet tutorial or pattern related to my project, I’ll link to it so that you can check it out too! If I’m crocheting a garment, I’ll share the finished product in its own video so you can see the entire process start to finish.

Why start the “What I’m Walking With” video series?ย For years I hosted a weekly live video. Every Thursday at 7:00 pm we’d all get together on video chat live from my craft room and talk about anything and everything yarn related. We’d go over current WIPs, talk about new yarns, any new hooks on the market, etc. We had SO. MUCH. FUN!

I ended those weekly live videos when my mom got breast cancer in 2019 so that I could devote more of my energy to helping her through that time. (She’s doing GREAT now!) Then 2020 happened… then my ex and I divorced in 2021 and I moved into a small apartment with my two teenage boys. I just didn’t have the space or the time in my schedule to restart the lives. Then I met my amazing boyfriend and now this crazy house is jam packed with teenage boys and I barely have room for my yarn stash much less a studio or place to do live videos. That being said… life has never been better! 💖

Make sure that you are following Heart Hook Home on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and on YouTube. If I have an existing crochet video tutorial relevant to what I’m working on I’ll link to that on the YouTube shorts! How cool is that?!

I hope that by including you in the design process and behind-the-scenes on a regular basis, that we rekindle that familiarity we had when my life was more conducive to frequent live videos. I am so excited to share my daily crochet projects with you!

  1. Oh Ashley, It was so good to read this post. It sounds like you've been through quite a bit over the last few years. Great news that you've met a wonderful person and your in a new relationship. You sound very happy. Imso excited to follow your "What Im Walking With" series. I never ever would have thought about walking and crocheting at the same time, but I love love love the idea of it. I walk 30 minutes each day, and to be honest, I get bored. This might just be the answer!! Off to look for a Fanny Pack. See you soon, lovely. I'll be checking in regularly for this one. Hugs Lorraine
  2. Hi Ashley, thank you so much for the update on how you're doing. I've been lurking for a while. I noticed your fitness changes (go you!!), divorce, and move... do you still have room for that amazing yarn wall in your new place? I am glad things are going so well for you! - Sarah
  3. I want to do this so badly but I'm afraid I'm going to eat it. Lol. How are you able to walk and crochet at the same time? I'll just have to practice I guess. I have a few parks with some small paths, nothing like the one you walk in! Just means more laps for me I guess. Lol. Does your Fitbit do a good job of tracking your distance even though your arms are not moving in the typical walking fashion?
  4. I LOVE that I have come across your walking crochet blogs & socials, THANK YOU!!! You have given me inspiration. I have had low back fusion from herniated disc & just getting back to my ability to walk againโ€ฆ but havenโ€™t wanted to stop crocheting to do so so I am getting back into & want to be able to crochet as I do so!
