Here we are! As this is the Youth Large Cardigan size of the Cozy Classroom Cardigan free crochet pattern series, this is the last. The youth sizes range from 3 month to youth large (14/16) and the men’s ranges from adult small to 4XL Tall!

Cozy Coed Cardigan

Youth size Large cardigan crochet pattern for boys

Measurements for 14/16 youth:

Armhole to armhole (across back) = 15”
Neck to hem = 22”
Upper arm = 14″ circumference
Cuff = 9″ circumference
Sleeve length = 19”
Body circumference = 34”

Materials:

Worsted weight (size 4/Aran) yarn (such as this)
-approx. 1,000 yards total for 14/16 cardigan
Crochet hook in size J/6mm
Elbow patches (optional – but darn cute!)

Gauge: 11 hdc and 10 rows in 4” square

Fhdc – Foundation Half Double Crochet
Fphdc – Front Post Half Double Crochet
Bphdc – Back Post Half Double Crochet
Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet
Bpdc – Back Post Double Crochet

Cardigan crochet pattern for boys

Cozy Classroom (Youth Large Cardigan) Pattern 

Row 1: Fhdc-68. (or ch-69, hdc in 2nd chain from hook and each to end) (68)

Row 2: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (68)

Rows 3 – 38: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (68)

Row 39 & 40: Ch-1, turn, hdc in 46 sts. (46)

Row 41: Ch-1, hdc in 46 sts AND THEN ch-23. (69)

Row 42: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. (68)

Rows 43 – 57: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (68)

Fasten off.

Row 1: Ch-1, hdc in 46 sts (46)

Row 2: Ch-1, turn, hdc in 50 sts, * 2hdc in next, hdc in 2 sts * repeat between * * 5 times. 2hdc in next, hdc in 24 sts, * 2hdc in next, hdc in 2 sts * repeat between * * 5 times. 2hdc in next, hdc in 50 sts. (176)

Sleeves:

Starting a crochet sleeve

Attach yarn at bottom of armhole with sl st.

Row 1: Ch-1, hdc 44 times evenly around, hdc2tog, hdc2tog. (46)

Do not join, work in spiral instead using stitch markers to note first st of each round.

Row 2 – 4: hdc in each st around (46)

Row 5: hdc in each st around, hdc2tog in last 2 sts

Row 6: hdc in each st around

Rows 7 – 42: repeat rows 5 & 6 eighteen times (ending with 27)

Rows 43 – 46: * fphdc in first, bphdc in next * repeat between * * around. Slip st to top of next st. Invisible join and weave in ends.

  1. Hi there! I'm very confused... I'm working on a child size 14/16. The pattern is reading HDC (half double crochet as I understand it.) The video is saying double crochet. Which is it for the collar? Thanks for your time!

    1. The video is doing an adult version which the edging sts may vary slightly...follow the written pattern.

  2. Hi! I am currently working on your YOUTH 14-16. I am on row three of the edging. I meticulously counted all my edging rows, because they ALWAYS confuse me. On row three it says to hdc 46, *fphdc around next st, bphdc around next* repeat between* * 41 times, fphdc around next, hdc in 46 sts. (176) I cannot figure this out, if I do a fphdc in the next st after the * * I only have 45 sts to do hdc in. Am I missing a step, or is the pattern for this size off? :(

  3. I am working on size 3-6 months and having some trouble. I finished the sides an back but when I fold the sides to ward the front the side panels touch in the middle. Leaving no room to start the collar. I worked up the pattern a few times to make sure the count was correct but still no space. I purchased the full pattern for the adult version and I am working off the version listed here for the smaller size.

  5. I’m making the larger child size and presently working on sleeve #1. My sleeve seam is rolling to front as I continue. Is this normal? As I complete each round I’ve been slip stitching to chain of starting stitch, ch 1 then continue next row. Your pattern doesn’t specify otherwise. Should I have spiraled the stitches?

  7. Hi, this sweater is beautiful!! But I am a little confused about the overall construction of it. Is the back panel being worked from one side to the other? And then you go back to where you started to finish the other front panel/armhole? Is there a bottom edging on this sweater as well? Again, thank you for this beautiful pattern!

    1. Hi Joanne! Yes, that is correct on the construction. I did not put a bottom edging on this, but you can absolutely add one if you want. =)

  9. Do you have any recommendations on adding a hood to this? My 11 year old is wanting a hooded cardigan ( he hated the look of a pullover) but I'm not having any luck at finding one that isn't girly looking. Any help would be great.

    1. Hi Donna! No changes needed if you're using sugarwheel. It is a 4 weight yarn which is what the pattern calls for =)

  12. Hello, I haven’t started this but I’m hoping to soon. I’m confused after row 57 what do you consider the bottom of the cardigan? Can you show me what is the bottom on the picture? Thanks I hope I can figure it out my son wants it for his class which is always cold.

    1. Hi Samantha! In rows 1-57 you will be making the back panel, an armhole, and 1 front panel...then, by laying out your piece with the 1st armhole made at the top, we can find the bottom. In the photo between rows 57 and 58, my hook is inserted in the bottom stitch you would need to start row 58 in. Hope this helps!
