A dog poncho is a great alternative to a crocheted dog sweater for multiple reasons. Not only is it super stylish (with several different human versions coming soon!) but it is easy to put on.

This is the 11th installment of the 2024 Dog Crochet Series. One more and we’ll have had an entire year of crocheting for our dogs! I hope you’ve enjoyed all of the patterns so far in the series.

If your dog has arthritis or trouble with their joints, this is a great option for them to have clothing of their own. Just slip it over their head and settle it across their body and they’re all set!

My rescue Cher is a mixed breed with obvious signs of Chihuahua and Dachshund. She’s adorable but regular sweaters from the store and many of the ones you can find on Amazon just don’t fit her very well.

Sure, we can customize the Dandy Dog Sweater, the Stellar Dog Sweater, or the Wild Berry Dog Sweater pattern to be longer in the body – an easy and completely customizable design feature! – but what if we just made them a poncho instead?

This Dog Poncho crochet pattern is super easy to follow. We are using the gorgeous Alpine Stitch. If you’ve never used this stitch before you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to create.

This poncho pattern for dogs spans several sizes, from XXS to 2XL. When selecting which size to make for your dog, you’ll want to measure their neck first. Make the size that will comfortably fit without being tight. The length of the chest and the length of the body are completely customizable for each individual dog. LOVE THAT!

For this pattern I am using Brava Sport yarn. This is a size 2, 100% acrylic yarn that is durable and has a wide array of color choices. I used “Avocado” for Cher’s version and “Fairy Tale” for Maisey’s.

  1. Hi Ashlea This poncho is super cute and I’d love to make one for each of my 2 girlies (Shih Tzus) but I’m wondering how will they keep from sliding off their body as they walk proudly displaying their new poncho through the neighborhood I’ve tried making the type of sweater that has a band and buttons on the top and they ended up sliding off their body so I took it apart and made the wrap around style so I’m just wondering if the poncho will end up sliding off I’m new to your group and came across your patterns while searching for vests and wow I love your ideas and work now I’ll be busy making a few of them Thank you for sharing them!
  2. @Karen Elliott Thank you for your response, I need to read the pattern a few time I think, but I think, I think I understand. I just have trouble getting the increases that fall at the front shoulders to look even. I think I was losing count of my stitches and it was getting all wonky. I will keep trying! ~ D
  3. Hi! I love your patterns, they're always so clear and work up wonderfully. I'm just wondering if I could sub a worsted weight yarn for this pattern for the XXS size and if you can recommend any easy adjustments for sizing to make it work. I'm thinking I could potentially just do the math and create one size smaller to accommodate for the heavier yarn (i.e. XXS is 33 FDC for the first round and I could do 25 because you have a difference of 8 stitches between each subsequent size). And then just try my best to keep that up throughout? I'm making this for a friend's chihuahua and I want to honour her Mexican roots with this perfect yarn colourway I found. Can't find anything similar in a lighter weight yarn. I suspect the heavier yarn won't drape as well but willing to try and see. Thanks for any input you have offer!
  4. Hi! I've been crocheting for years, but still identify as beginner. I'm confused. I'm terribly to crochet for size L, and they numbers in () beginning round 5 have me lost. I'm starting round 5 for the chest, do I continue to round 9? But then the next round is round 6? Help please!
    1. Hi Deyanira For a size large, you’ll be using the 5th number in the brackets. So for around 5, you’ll end with 65 stitches. I copied the pattern and pasted it into my notes. Then I went through the pattern and highlighted all the numbers that corresponded with the size I was making. That made life so much easier!!! ✅Round 5: Ch-1, turn, * bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st * repeat between * * around, bpdc around last st. Join to top of first st with sl st. (33, 41, 49, 57, 65, 71, 79)
  5. Hi! What a cute poncho! I'm fairly new at crocheting and wonder what the series of numbers, that correspond to the size, are added at the end of each set of instructions. Is it because we need to make sure that we still have that number of stitches in the row?
  6. I love this pattern so much and can’t wait for our Shipoo to model it around the neighborhood! Just one comment about the Alpine Stitch. Is it meant to be modified in this pattern? All the instructions I’ve seen about Alpine include a 3-row repeat: 1 row dc 1 row sc 1 row dc, fpdc dc, fpdc etc This pattern excludes the dc row. Was that intentional? Thank you so much for sharing this adorable pattern!!
  7. Hi, I love this pattern :) Do you have thoughts on to add an opening to use with a harness & leash? I didn't see mention of it, I'm hoping didn't miss it.
  8. I need help with the dog poncho pattern which I purchased and had emailed to me. I finished rows 1-4 but got lost when I got to do 2dc in first stitch and then dc in 15 sets. Not clear to me. I did ch 2 but did not turn. Now what? ASAP
    1. Great pattern, I made one for my senior German Shepherd! In response to Barbara Meyer’s question, I used worsted weight yarn. I measured my dog and found the size appropriate (XL) then went down one size and crocheted the Large size. Turned out fantastic!
  9. I only recently found your site and I love it. How could I have missed it? I am 95 years old and have been crocheting since I was 9 or 10 ( I don't remember - but that is typical at this age). I like that you repeat how certain stitches are completed - there goes that lack of memory again but as soon as I see it written I remember. Thanks! I shall return often. I love the poncho pattern and Lynn Whinery's comment is great.
  10. I don’t see a size chart for the dog poncho - help! Looking forward to making this for my greyhound!
  11. I love this, it's adorable!!! However, I suggest adding a belly band, perhaps something that could be attached with buttons on each side, otherwise it could slide off as the dog moves. It really is gorgeous!
